Summary:
Despite lacking a bit in story and characterization, “Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time” is an entertaining popcorn flick worth checking out.

Story:

In ancient Persia, Prince Dastan aids his brothers in a siege against a holy city. Little does he know that inside the city is a magical dagger with the power to turn back time. Princess Tamina protects the dagger. When the invaders overrun the city, Dastan recovers the dagger but is completely unaware of the magical powers that it possesses. Tamina is also captured and offered as a prize to Dastan’s father, King Sharaman.

Unfortunately Sharaman is killed and Dastan is framed for the assassination. He barely escapes from the captured city with Tamina and the dagger. Now on the run, he must find a way to clear his name and uncover the true murderers. But the success of his quest may have far more important consequences for the entire world.

  • Sarah Polley as Elsa Kast
  • Delphine Chanéac as Dren
  • Brandon McGibbon as Gavin Nicoli
  • Simona Maicanescu as Joan Chorot
  • David Hewlett as William Barlow
  • Abigail Chu as Child Dren

Review:

Clive (Adrien Brody) and Elsa (Sarah Polley) don’t want much out of life except to save the world from genetic diseases. To do that, they’ve begun splicing the genomes of various animals together in order to create living laboratories for new vaccines. But when the heartless corporation they work for decides they’re going to have to give up the sexy lab work and spend a few years on actually making money, well that’s just too far. Instead they decide to go the next step forward secretly, mixing human genes into their program by themselves and without telling anyone. What could go wrong?

When you start out with your main characters named after the lead actors from “Bride of Frankenstein” you can be pretty sure you’re in for a big homage and that’s more or less what we get from “Splice.” Same prescriptive about the dangers of meddling with nature, same obvious lack of concern about the psychological care for the creation. It’s been what, 150 some odd years since Mary Shelly wrote the original template and no one has been able to really build on that since James Whale’s seminal film. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it, I guess.

  • Martin Mull as Holbrook
  • Alex Borstein as Lily Baily

  • Letoya Luckett as Amanda
  • Michael Daniel Cassady as Milo Larry Joe Campbell as Pete Denham
  • Directed by Robert Luketic

Story:
While on vacation with her overbearing parents, Jen Kornfeldt (Katherine Heigl) meets the good-looking Spencer (Ashton Kutcher). One thing leads to another and three years after getting married, Jen learns that there’s more to Spencer than he seems – he’s an assassin! And though he retired to be with her, a $20 million bounty has been put on his head forcing them both on the run from all the killers trying to collect it.

Analysis:

If you ever wondered who might win in an “Who is More Annoying?” Contest between Katherine Heigl and Ashton Kutcher, their first (and hopefully last) pairing together in “Killers” makes it an even tougher call, since they both do little to endear themselves to anyone who may feel anything good or entertaining can come out of putting them together.

The obvious reference for this high concept situational comedy is Doug Liman’s “Mr. & Mrs. Smith,” which first brought the pairing of Brangelina to light. For many reasons, “Killers” completely misses the point of why that movie worked by never figuring out how to blend the comedy, the romance and the action into anything that feels like it belongs in the same movie.

Review:

It seems like there are only a handful of careers open to the female of romantic comedies: writer, editor, fashion designer, maybe a songwriter or painter. Sometimes. It’s because the movies these characters appear in are fantasies, which is fine as far as it goes, but it also usually means the stories they appear in have been designed to work as vehicles for a fantasy, not as a workable narrative. It doesn’t mean it can never work, but you can still take it as a useful rule of thumb that a movie where the main character is one of these simply isn’t serious.
